How to Use Coroplast in a C and C Cage for Guinea Pigs

Coroplast (or correx) is an essential component for the construction of C&C cages for guinea pigs and rabbits. It creates a waterproof, lightweight, foldable and easy-to-clean cage base. But how to use and clean it?

Here are all our tips for using coroplast sheets in your C&C cage.

Why use coroplast sheets for your guinea pig cage?

The advantages of coroplast sheets are numerous. They are :

  • Light
  • Foldable and transportable
  • Waterproof
  • Easy to clean
  • Interchangeable if you wish to change the color of the cage
  • Can be combined as desired to create large cages

Note: It is important to build your cage with solid coroplast sheets of at least 650 grams/m2.

How to use Kavee coroplast sheets?

Kavee coroplast sheets are equipped with locking slots to make it easier to set up your cage.

To install your coroplast sheet, follow these steps:

Step 1: Prepare your correx sheets by folding the edges along the folds.

Step 2: Insert the 4 locks into the slots from the outside towards the inside of the cage. Go straight ahead, the corner must be fully fixed.

Step 3: Your correx is ready. Set it up in your C&C cage.

How to combine two sheets of correx?

Our correx plates are cut to fit 3x2 and 4x2 cages. However, you can combine them to create larger cages.

Here is the procedure:

Step 1: Prepare your correx plates by folding the edges along the folds.

Step 2: Place the first sheet of correx leaving the side where the sheets will overlap open and closing the locking slots on the cage side only.

NOTE: the correx is placed directly on the floor, no grids are needed underneath.

Step 3: Then place the second plate in superimposition, leaving the side at the junction open and closing the locking slots on the cage side.

How do I clean the correx sheets?

Clean the correx sheets using soft detergents. There are several ways to clean your correx sheets: soap and hot water, dishwashing liquid, a multi-surface detergent, or even vinegar if you're eco-friendly.

You can also use bleach diluted 1 to 20. Don't use too much liquid: simply wipe it with a wet cloth. Note that guinea pigs do not like the strong odor of artificial detergents. If detergent is used, use it sparingly!

What if my guinea pig nibbles the correx base?

Although this is more common with rabbits, sometimes your guinea pigs may get a bit nibble happy with their coroplast walls. If you find your furry friend chomping away, it may be because they are curious about their new cage, stressed or are simply trying to grab your attention, temporarily. You will be pleased to learn that coroplast is not poisonous to your pets. However, if want to keep your cage in top condition, you can always opt for nibble guards which are thin pieces of transparent hard plastic that slots over the top edges of your coroplast. Kavee now offers nibble guards in all rabbit C&C cage kits and C&C guinea pig cages with ramps. Nibble guards are also available to buy separately.
